Abner Barros, 28 years old, was awarded this February with the Black Engineer of the Year award in the scientific pioneering category that distinguishes members of minority groups who are actively creating and showing the new generation new paths in the fields of science, technology and development.

Abner was born in Cape Verde but emigrated to the United States in 2007, aged 12. He obtained his degree in electricity in 2016 and in 2019 he completed his master's degree.

While preparing his doctorate at the University of Massachusetts, he works as an engineer and researcher at the headquarters of the Naval Undersea Warfare Center of the United States (Naval Undersea Warfare Center) in the city of Newport, in the state of Rhode Island.

The center specializes in the research, development, testing and evaluation of new technologies to support submarines and other autonomous attack and defense systems linked to submarine warfare, and Abner's research focuses mainly on advanced computational systems to detect and locate submarine targets. , using multiple sonar systems.

“My passion for scientific inquiry is guided by the sense and purpose of, through scientific curiosity, connecting the known data and developing new concepts to explore what is not known” - said Abner, who also has the purpose of motivating and helping his community , mainly young Cape Verdeans who want to make a career in science and technology and who eventually may need guidance or information.
